Pulmonary Function Test at Phoenix Hospital
PFT stands for Pulmonary Function Test. This Test is conducted to analyze the lung volume, rates of flow, and gas exchange. This Test is Non-invasive in nature and in simple language it shows how really well the lungs are working. The inputs obtained from PFT enable Doctors on diagnosis and even determine the treatment for lung related disorders.
Usually either of the below two scenarios can be expected if there is a problem with the functioning of the Lungs. The first scenario is where Lungs are unable to expand sufficiently enough to maintain good air flow. The second scenario is where there is reduced airflow due to some obstruction in the passage.
Pulmonary Function Test can be done in two ways. Firstly the Spirometry Test which measures how much air you are able to breathe in and out of your lungs. This test is prescribed by your doctor if you have persistent cough or shortness of breath.PFT can used in monitoring conditions like Asthma, Pulmonary & Cystic Fibrosis or any other Chronic Pulmonary Disease. This test is performed by placing a clip on the nose making you blow directly into a spirometer (a small tube) at least 3 times for accuracy. Secondly Lung Plethysmography, a more accurate test is conducted to measure how much air your lungs can hold. This test is conducted to assess presence of any lung disease, follow the response to a particular treatment or medication etc.During both the tests you will be asked to avoid alcohol, smoking, heavy exercise or a substantial meal for a particular few hours before the test.
