Colon is the biggest part of the large intestine where the stools are stored temporarily before excretion. Colon absorbs the water from stool and maintains the fluid balance for body and also plays role in digestion of remaining undigested food. Any blockade or growth of polyp in colon may result in severe abdominal pain, change in bowel activity, unexpected weight loss or bleeding from anus. Colonoscopy is an invasive procedure where an instrument called colonoscope is inserted thru anus and moved inside the colon for getting the real-time images of the colon. The colonoscope is a long, flexible tube-like instrument with light and camera at its rear end. The colonoscope is connected to the electronic screen for viewing the captured images. It can even carry a probe along with it which is capable of cutting a small part of the polyp / growth for biopsy purpose. During the process of colonoscopy, colonoscope releases gas inside the colon for capturing the clear picture of inside of large intestine. Patient is sedated and given pain reliver prior to the procedure.

Colonoscopy is recommended for diagnosis of colorectal cancer in a suspected patient above the age of 50-75 years with a family history of colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease.
